During an earlier committee meeting, the city’s director of engineering, planning, asset management and infrastructure said the city had not been collecting information on drivers, vehicles and complaints “like it should have been.”

Council also discussed concerns about unlicensed drivers advertising rides through social media.

“There’s a few online, on Facebook, on social media, that you can just phone for a ride that are not registered cabs,” Coun. Bill Ironstand said in a prior meeting. “We need to properly manage that.”

Under the bylaw, vehicle-for-hire operators must be licensed companies. Drivers switching between companies must receive city approval before operating under a new licence, and companies are required to notify the city of any driver changes.

The bylaw also gives enforcement officers the authority to stop vehicles, verify licences and remove unsafe or unlicensed vehicles from service if they fail to meet municipal requirements.

The updated regulations take effect following council’s approval and are intended to provide the city with clearer authority to license, monitor and enforce vehicle-for-hire operations.
