‘These aren’t minor inconveniences’: RCMP, North Battleford address recent crime concerns

Battlefords RCMP and the City of North Battleford say they continue to take steps to address ongoing crime after local business owners raised concerns about safety in the city.

The concerns follow recent incidents involving damage to a local salon, which was vandalized for the third time since 2021, and the theft of about $10,000 worth of equipment from a secured job box at a worksite.

“Battlefords RCMP are acutely aware of the ongoing issue of property crimes, thefts, and vandalism and how frustrating this is for the public,” Inspector Ryan How said in a statement to battlefordsNOW. “These aren’t minor inconveniences and have tremendous impact on business owners, citizens, and just the overall feeling of safety in the communities.”

How said officers are often able to make arrests during these investigations, but the impact on deterring further offences is limited.

“We routinely see the same offenders committing the same offences time and time again,” he said.

RCMP are using different strategies to reduce property crime and are encouraging the public to report suspicious activity so officers can focus on areas experiencing frequent incidents. Police are also working on initiatives in rural areas and stressed the importance of timely reporting, given the large area they serve.

The City of North Battleford also acknowledged the ongoing concerns, stating community safety and well-being remain a core pillar of city council’s strategic plan. Officials said 26 per cent of its annual operating budget is dedicated to protective services.

“Driven by direct community feedback, the Battlefords RCMP and Community Safety Officers have significantly increased downtown foot patrols over the past two years,” the city said in a statement.

The city also helps fund proactive safety initiatives, including Battlefords Citizens on Patrol and the Downtown Business Improvement District’s contracted security services.

“While complex social challenges like mental health, addictions, and housing and food insecurity fall under the mandate and jurisdiction of the Provincial Government, the City actively advocates for local needs.”

The city also works with other levels of government and community organizations to identify gaps in services and secure resources to address issues that can contribute to crime. Recent investments in and expansions of local housing are examples of what these partnerships have helped achieve, the city said.

Officials encouraged residents to continue sharing feedback directly with the city, reporting problem properties to Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods, and identifying gaps or concerns related to social programming and supports with the Government of Saskatchewan. Residents are also encouraged to report all criminal activity directly to Battlefords RCMP.
