Nigerians to celebrate 66 years of independence in North Battleford

Oct 9, 2026 | 5:04 PM

Nigerians from across Saskatchewan are being invited to North Battleford this weekend to celebrate 66 years since their country gained independence from British colonial rule.

The Nigerians in Battlefords group is organizing an Independence Day celebration Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Western Development Museum, bringing together Nigerian culture and community.

The event will run from 2 to 10 p.m., featuring traditional Nigerian food, music, dancing, cultural displays and attire, along with opportunities for networking and community connections.

Organizers are inviting Nigerians from North Battleford, Battleford, Saskatoon, Lloydminster, Prince Albert, Meadow Lake and neighbouring communities to take part.

The celebration follows Nigeria’s official Independence Day on Oct. 1, commemorating the country’s independence from Britain in 1960.

The country also officially joined the Commonwealth that day, immediately becoming part of the international association that includes Canada. The two countries later established direct, formal diplomatic relations in 1962, two years after Nigeria’s independence.

Their connection also extends to Saskatchewan through immigration.

According to the Saskatchewan Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria was the fourth most common country of birth among immigrants who arrived in the province between 2016 and 2021, accounting for 7.7 per cent of newcomers during that period.

The 2021 census also recorded 5,030 Nigerian-born immigrants living in Saskatchewan.

Saturday’s celebration will showcase some of Nigeria’s cultural diversity, with the event’s promotional material highlighting the Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba cultural groups.

Organizers are encouraging participants to wear Nigerian attire and bring family and friends. The event is being promoted as a celebration for all ages.
