Dog fatally shot during walk with owner in North Battleford

Jun 29, 2026 | 2:10 PM

A routine evening walk turned deadly when a North Battleford man’s dog was fatally shot after occupants of a passing truck allegedly threatened him before opening fire.

RCMP said they received a report of a firearm discharge on 8th Avenue North at about 8 p.m. on June 26.

Investigators said a man was walking his dog when a truck carrying multiple occupants approached him. The occupants allegedly uttered threats before discharging a firearm, injuring the dog. The truck then fled the area.

The dog was declared dead at the scene. The man was not physically injured.

RCMP said officers located the suspect truck parked outside a residence on 110 Street in North Battleford a short time later. Three men exited the residence and were arrested without incident, while a woman who fled on foot was also arrested.

With assistance from the Saskatchewan RCMP Critical Incident Response Team, officers later obtained a search warrant for the residence, where they seized two firearms.

RCMP have not said whether the man and the truck’s occupants knew each other or what prompted the confrontation.

Dennis Kennedy, 37, of North Battleford faces 11 Criminal Code charges, including injuring or endangering animals, careless use of a firearm, discharging a firearm while being reckless, possession of a firearm with a tampered serial number, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, multiple firearms possession offences and operation while prohibited.

Allan Desmeules, 53, of North Battleford is charged with unsafe storage of firearms, unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing the possession was unauthorized and two counts of possessing weapons contrary to a prohibition order.

Tashina Whitstone, 39, of Red Pheasant Cree Nation is charged with uttering threats to animals and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

RCMP said one of the men initially taken into custody was later released without charge.

Kennedy appeared in North Battleford Provincial Court on Monday. Desmeules and Whitstone are scheduled to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Aug. 17.
