Flu clinics start across province Monday

Saskatchewan residents will be able to get their free flu shot starting Oct. 22 at public health clinics and pharmacies across the province.

The publicly-funded vaccination program offers the injectable vaccine, which provides protection against four different flu virus strains most likely to circulate this season.

Flu shots are recommended for seniors, people with underlying chronic health conditions, children under five, and pregnant women. This year, the province is providing a high dose vaccine for long-term-care residents 65 and older. This vaccine offers improved protection for the elderly. 

The role of pharmacists is being expanded this year to allow them to administer the free flu shot to residents five and up, during home visits, and in congregate living settings.

Children under five but over six months old and non-Saskatchewan residents can be vaccinated at a public health clinic.

“Don’t wait. Get your flu shot early in the season to protect yourself, your family and those to whom you provide care,” Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab said in a release from the province.

In the Battlefords, the Frontier Mall will have a walk-in clinic on Oct. 22, 25, 29 and Nov. 1, 3, and 5. The Territorial Place Mall will host a clinic on Nov. 7. Times vary and can found online at www.4flu.ca or by calling a public health office or the HealthLine at 811.

Residents are reminded to bring their Saskatchewan health card and be prepared to wait for an additional 15 minutes after being immunized.
