Province asks anglers to remove ice fishing shacks

Mar 8, 2017 | 10:34 AM

As ice fishing season begins to wind down, the province is asking anglers to remove their ice fishing shelters.

Shacks south of Highway 16 must be removed by March 15, and shelters in areas north of the highway must be removed by March 31. The province reminds anglers if shelters are not removed in time, owners may be prosecuted, and shacks and all its contents may be confiscated. Litter must also be removed.

Shelters must be taken off the ice and moved to a location above the high water mark. Ice fishing shelters must display the owner’s complete name, address and phone number in large, legible letters.

Abandoned shacks, left on the ice pose a danger to boaters, water-skiers and swimmers. Pieces of wood routinely wash up on shore and create environmental hazards.
