North Stars host Mustangs amid recent struggles

Oct 9, 2026 | 1:32 PM

The Battlefords North Stars are home for the Thanksgiving weekend, beginning a two-game set Friday night against the Melfort Mustangs.

Melfort (4-3-0-0, second in the UPL Division) lost its last game 4-2 to the Weyburn Red Wings, while the North Stars are also trying to get back into the win column after two straight losses.

The North Stars (2-3-1-0, fourth in the Nutrien Division) have been outscored 9-2 over their last two games, but head coach Connor Logan said the results have not been too frustrating. He said the team understands it is a process early in the season.

“You’re learning things, right? You’re learning about your group. You’re learning that you don’t have the same group that you had last year,” he said.

“Every year you have a process to go through, and we went through a pretty rigorous one last year. Maybe we got ahead of ourselves this year in assuming we didn’t need to do that because there were so many returning guys, but we took a couple of steps back and took accountability upon ourselves to realize that it’s a new team.”

North Stars captain Owen Dyck added that while the team may not be where it would like to be, the players have not lost faith in the group.

“I don’t think we’re really in that bad of a place. We’re a really good team. Just got to find our groove and get going,” Dyck said.

Friday marks the first meeting between the North Stars and Mustangs since a physical playoff series last season that saw the North Stars win in five games.

Logan said he expects the energy to pick up because of the teams’ styles of play rather than because it is a playoff rematch.

“Blevins has had a lot of success in this league. He likes to play the game a certain way, and we’re no different. We thrive on that competitiveness and that animosity,” Logan said.

“So I’m sure both teams are going to bring it, develop a new sense of competitiveness that’s probably different than last year, but I can’t imagine it being too far off from that feeling.”

With the team still coming together, Logan thinks a physical, playoff-style game could benefit the North Stars.

“It just drags everybody into the fight. You figure out which guys have that tenaciousness and that determination to play through that kind of adversity in that type of game and have success. Those guys help you win in the playoffs.”

The Ultra Print pregame show begins at 7 p.m., with puck drop for NAPA Auto Parts North Stars hockey at 7:30 p.m. when the North Stars host the Mustangs on CJNB/CJNS.
