Darkangelo leads Victoire to 2-1 win over Charge

MONTREAL — Shiann Darkangelo had a goal and an assist as the Montreal Victoire beat the Ottawa Charge 2-1 at Place Bell on Tuesday night in Professional Women’s Hockey League action.

Darkangelo, who had her first multi-point game for Montreal, was a member of the Charge last season. Jessica Digirolamo also scored for the Victoire (5-2-0-4), who won their third straight game. Ann-Renee Desbiens made 16 saves.

Ronja Savolainen scored for the Charge (3-4-0-6), who saw their franchise-record six-game winning streak snapped. Gwyneth Philips was outstanding in goal, making 29 saves. Philips leads the PWHL in saves this season.

Darkangelo scored a power-play goal 3:58 into the game, batting home a ricochet off the back boards from a Maggie Flaherty shot. It was Darkangelo’s second goal of the season.

DiGirolamo doubled the Montreal lead later in the first with a diving effort right in front of Philips to put the loose puck in the net. It was her first goal since signing as a free agent this summer.

Ottawa got one back on the power play when Savolainen scored on a rebound with only 2.9 seconds left in the opening frame.

The second period had no goals, but Montreal had plenty of chances to extend the lead. The hosts outshot Ottawa 13-4 in the period, and Jade Downie-Landry, Skylar Irving and Laura Stacey couldn’t finish. The Charge had a chance of their own in the period, but Amanda Boulier cleared the puck out of the crease in front of an empty cage early in the frame.

The final 20 minutes of regulation saw the Charge struggle to generate any offence, as they only had three shots in the third period chasing a one-goal deficit and were outshot 31-18. Both power plays went 1-for-4 on the night.

The Victoire played the game without top-line forward Abby Roque, who was serving a one-game suspension for a match penalty in the team’s previous game.

Victoire: Montreal, which was in last place nine days ago, moved into a tie for second in the PWHL with the win. The hosts also got much-needed secondary scoring on their two first goals, snapping a five-game cold spell.

Charge: Philips was outstanding once again for Ottawa, and appears to enjoy playing against Montreal. She was in goal for the team’s two regular-season wins against the Victoire last season as well as all four games of their 3-1 playoff series win.

Savolainen’s goal with 2.9 seconds left in the first period could have taken momentum away from Montreal, but the Victoire had a 13-4 shot advantage in the second period, and 18-7 over the last two periods.

Montreal has yet to lose a game at home this season, moving to 3-1-0-0 at Place Bell. They have the best home record in the PWHL.
