Switching sports by season: local Indian Relay racer tries out for Minnesota NAHL team

Jul 1, 2026 | 7:01 AM

The past week has been an incredibly eventful one for 18-year-old Battlefords native Holden Fauchon, who travelled to Austin, Minn., to try out for the Austin Bruins of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) before returning for his high school graduation from John Paul II Collegiate.

“It’s been pretty chaotic. A lot of planning, a lot of late nights,” said Fauchon.

The goaltender was in Minnesota for four days as part of the tryout and said he was happy with how he performed.

“It’s been pretty good for me, I had a good showing there. I made it to the final cuts there then I had to fly home for grad,” he said.

Fauchon will now have to wait to find out if he made the squad.

On top of pursuing the next level in hockey, Fauchon also competes in Indian Relay with Northern Sky Relay, which he said he will continue to do during the summer whether a move to the U.S. becomes a reality or not.

Fauchon said while he has a passion for hockey, his “number one” sport depends on the season.

“I’m a big hockey guy, but I definitely found myself wishing I was home riding horses when I was down in Austin. But I think it just kind of depends on the season. I love them both very much, it’s hard to pick.”

He has played hockey since he was around four years old but didn’t start riding horses until about three years ago, so he has picked up Indian Relay very quickly.

“I started coming around and then eventually became a barn hand helping them. One show, their rider wasn’t there yet, and they needed some horses to go out on the track. So, I stepped up and took one out and I just fell in love with it ever since then.”

Aside from the fact that both sports help Fauchon stay in shape in general, he spoke about some parallels between hockey and Indian Relay.

“I think movement for sure. Communication, talking with my horses, talking with the people on the ground, then being goalie and having to talk to your players,” he said.

“I got to be focused on everything, my jump, where my horse is running, where my horse is looking at, what the next horse is doing, what my setter is doing. So, you have to be focused there. Same with hockey. You got to know where everybody is on the ice.”

As he awaits the result of his tryout with the Bruins, Fauchon also said he has spoken to the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and the Waywayseecappo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Wherever Fauchon ends up, it is important for him to represent his Métis roots.

“I like representing my community, especially within Indian Relay. We’re the only Métis team, so it means a lot to be representing,” he said.

After an eventful week of travelling, tryouts and graduation, Fauchon will be back on the track on Tuesday and Wednesday, competing at Onion Lake with Northern Sky Relay.
