Getting to know Battlefords North Stars assistant captain Gavin Granger

When you think of the Battlefords North Stars this season, it’s tough not to think of defenceman Gavin Granger. The North Stars blueliner recently won the SJHL defenceman of the month but as a team player, he isn’t too concerned about an award like that.

“I’m more focused on getting on a roll right now and getting some wins for us,” said Granger.

After growing up in the small town of Coronach, Sask. until Grade 5, Granger lived in Saskatoon for most of his life. While he enjoys being close to home, Granger has embraced the Battlefords and loves the support that the team gets.

“Battlefords is awesome, it’s been great to me. You know, my billets are awesome, and the support we get around here is really great no matter where you go. You go into any store around here right now, and they know who you are, and they ask how the North Stars are doing and when our next game is. We get a lot of support down here, so it’s awesome.”

In the summer, Granger likes to spend his time outdoors. He mentioned he really enjoys golfing and fishing. He doesn’t go for any specific kinds of fish but enjoys just being outside and enjoying the experience.

“Whatever you grab, you grab,” said Granger.

He also enjoys ice fishing and has done so several times at Jackfish Lake. He does also enjoy his quiet time inside during the winter watching movies, TV shows and video games. Right now, he is watching Suits as well as Landman. He talked about how he likes comedy movies, specifically Adam Sandler flicks.

“All of them, man. They’re all pretty funny. I like Grown Ups 1 and 2, those are some of my favourite movies of all time.”

Granger says he enjoys all kinds of music, noting rap and country. He started going to concerts a couple of years ago and has already seen some big names live. Granger mentioned seeing Luke Brian, John Pardi, Bailey Zimmerman, Nickelback and Def Leppard. He perked up when he brought up seeing Nickelback specifically.

“That was unbelievable,” said Granger.

He hasn’t only seen concerts, but some stand up shows as well including Kevin Hart and Gabriel Iglesias.

The North Stars point leader has two older siblings, a brother and a sister.

His sister is currently going to school for business, while his brother and parents all work for SaskPower. However, those aren’t the career paths that Granger is interested in. He said that he is still figuring that out but has shown some interest in being a firefighter.

He enjoys being in a team-oriented atmosphere and wants to have a job with collaboration involved as well as something that can keep him in shape. He was clear that sitting at a desk all day isn’t for him.

Granger is on pace for 60 points this year, which would give him 92 career points with the North Stars. If he could reach 64 points in the season, that would bring him to 96 career points with the North Stars. This would put him in the top five in North Stars history for points by a defenceman.
