Senior girls ready for provincials after claiming gold in regionals

The John Paul II Collegiate girl’s senior volleyball team played their final home game of the season this past weekend as they got first place in 4A West regionals to advance to the provincial tournament.

The girls started off the weekend against Sakaskohc, where they won a convincing two sets to none.

Following that, they played a tight three set game against Meadow Lake, winning the first, losing the second and then taking victory in the third to advance to the playoffs.

For the semi-final, JPII took on a strong Humboldt team but continued with their success, winning the game in two sets.

Then in the finals, they were matched up against Meadow Lake for a rematch of their game earlier on in the weekend. This time though, JPII only needed two sets to get the job done, winning the first one 25-21 and the second 25-20 to take the gold for the region.

“It was definitely the result we were hoping for… I knew that our girls had the skill to win regionals so I am very pleased that they pulled through and were able to do it, especially cause last year we got second…but this year when we got to the finals, we were able to get gold. Now, we’re just really happy to keep playing one more weekend and have a shot at provincials, we’re really excited about that,” Quinn Baynham, head coach of the JPII senior girls volleyball team, said.

The girls now head to La Ronge this weekend to play in the provincial tournament at Churchill High School and Joseph Roberts Memorial Community Center.

Baynham has high hopes for the team but said that it will all come down to the players’ mental focus.

“I am expecting a very high result again, but I don’t want to get ahead of myself… It’ll just come down to the mentality of the players, if they can keep their heads in the game and play like they know they can, we know that we can have a good result.”

Opening ceremonies for provincials start on Thursday and the team will play their first round robin game on Friday at noon.
