Saskatchewan high school golf provincials concluded this past weekend at the Northern Meadows Golf Course in Goodsoil and it was a great success for the Battlefords, not only in the standings but in experience as well.

“It was a really great experience for everybody, the kids get to go away for a few days, they get to meet some new players and they get to play at a provincially renowned course and I know all of them were extra excited to be able to play on such a beautiful course,” said John Paul II Collegiate Golf Coach, Renae Atcheynum.

Representing the boys was Shae Maunula and Finn Silver, both from JP II Collegiate. For the girls, it was Gabriella Roa-Pena from JPII Collegiate and Presley Weber from North Battlefords Comprehensive High School.

Maunula scored the highest out of the four, getting ninth overall in the boys standings with a score of 157. Silver was 11th place with a score 161. In the girls standings, Roa-Pena claimed 25th with a score of 230 and Weber wasn’t far behind getting 28th with a score of 237.

With Maunula only being in Grade 9 and Roa-Pena, Silver and Weber all being in Grade 10, these results were a strong showing for the community, especially since they are younger students.

Atcheynum added she is excited to see the progress of the athletes in the years to come and hopes they can inspire interest in other kids to golf as well.

“We were very happy with that outcome and we’re extra proud of these kids because they are younger…I’m super excited to see where these kids go in the next few years and to maybe see if this drums up some more interest in our sport knowing that we had some great opportunities this weekend.”

The athletes will have a chance to show off their skills and make the provincial tournament again, starting with the district tournament in September of 2025.
