The City of North Battleford is gearing up to hold its annual Wintertainment again.

The event will take place from Feb. 19 to 25 at various venues, with both outside and inside activities for families to participate in.

“We have lots of new [activities] this year,” said City of North Battleford’s InnovationPlex general manager Michelle Horncastle, who encouraged people to take part in some of the offerings. “They are doing a lot of art workshops in the Don Ross Craft room.”

The week starts on Family Day Monday where the Battlefords CO-OP Aquatic Centre will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Regular admission fees apply.

Tuesday will include the “Ice Window Designs” workshop for all ages, with artist Kevin Quinlan, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the River Valley Centre.

“It’s a community art project where he [Quinlan] is making frozen ice windows,” Horncastle said. “It’s going to be an art display. It sounds really interesting. It’s something new for this year we’ll be offering.”

Kids are invited to take part in the Amazing Outdoor Race at 1 p.m. at the Don Ross Hill. The participants with the best homemade toboggan or crazy carpet will win a bonus prize. People are asked to register for this event.

“We planned this for last year, but it was about minus 30 the day it was scheduled, so it was moved inside,” Horncastle said. “I’m really excited to see this event hopefully happen outdoors this year.”

Families can also enjoy free public skating (11 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and family shinny hockey (1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.) at the Don Ross Arena. Helmets, sticks, gloves, and skates are required. This program will be available from Tuesday to Friday.

Wednesday kids of all ages can participate in Funky Forests – watercolour painting with ink from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Don Ross Craft room. A Winter Wonderland watercolour workshop will be held for teens and adults from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the same venue.

An all-ages scavenger hunt will be held from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Allen Sapp Gallery. This event runs from Wednesday to Sunday.

People are also invited to take in the shows running at the Chapel Gallery: Landscape Figures by Chris Hodge and the “Freeze Frame” Winter Photography Exhibition, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Hot chocolate or tea will be served from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program runs from Wednesday to Sunday.

Thursday offers an event called Wonderful Winter Wildlife – creating tissue paper art projects. The event is for all ages, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Don Ross Craft room. Kids can take part in the Wood Painting Project and Woodland Creatures Rock, for ages seven and older, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. also at the Don Ross Craft room.

Friday’s events include Winter Cityscapes for all ages, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Don Ross Craft room.

Families can take part in the Outdoor Science Day at the River Valley Centre. The event is for all ages, though children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. The program includes a nature scavenger hunt.

According to the city, families will “witness the eruption of an outdoor snow volcano and experience the magic of frozen bubbles”. People will also get a chance to enjoy homemade maple syrup. Participants are asked to register to take part.

“That [activity] is going to have some various science experiments and a bit of a nature scavenger hunt for families to do,” Horncastle said. “It will all be set up in stations out there.”

Saturday’s events include Glow Skate for all ages, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Connaught outdoor rink. People can sport their favourite neon clothing for a chance to win a prize. Hot chocolate with marshmallows will be served around the fire at the event.

Horncastle invites people to check out some of the many activities offered during Wintertainment.
