Battlefords Minor Football looks ahead to fall jamboree season

Aug 20, 2026 | 3:15 PM

As the football season approaches, Battlefords Minor Football (BMF) has handed out equipment and will begin practices next week for the organization’s two teams.

“The equipment handout went as smoothly as it could — that’s the only way to describe it,” said BMF president Kevin Pinno.

“Sometimes it’s so chaotic, but it went well, and it was a good chance to chat with parents and some of the athletes.”

Rather than playing a full season, Pinno said BMF will use a format similar to its spring season, with jamborees throughout the fall.

“The first one is Sept. 12 in Delisle. Then Sept. 20 is supposed to be Prince Albert. Sept. 27 is our home jamboree.”

Pinno said he hopes to hold a second home jamboree in October, but it has not been confirmed.

BMF will field two teams this year for players in Grades 6 to 8. With just over 30 players in total, both teams will have athletes playing on both sides of the ball, which Pinno said is crucial to their development.

“Everybody needs to learn how to catch. Everybody needs to learn how to tackle. Everybody needs to learn how to throw a ball,” he said.

“When we have situations where these athletes can play both sides of the ball, it just offers variety, and that variety is more fun. In the spring, we had kids begging to play both ways.”

With players potentially moving from BMF to high school football, experience at different positions is also important so they arrive with a broad range of skills.

“Something that I say to our high school athletes is, when I was playing football, I played nearly every single position that you could have. Starting in junior, I was defensive line at times, moved to linebacker, then I played defensive back,” said Pinno.

“I cannot stress enough that we don’t really know where they’re at. They become completely different people by the time they’re in Grade 11. So when they have those skills that they worked on in the grassroots program, we don’t have to re-teach something they should have learned five years ago.”

As BMF looks ahead to three fall jamborees, Pinno said the organization is also planning for the spring and is always seeking coaches, particularly on-field coaches.
