North Battleford crews working to clear city streets

It’s been a busy day for snow removal workers in and around the Battlefords Thursday. Private contractors have been busy clearing parking lots and sidewalks for local businesses.

Meanwhile, city crews started clearing roadways around 4 a.m. Thursday morning. City of North Battleford public relations coordinator Candace Toma says the work will continue well into the evening.

“They’ve been working really hard to ensure clearance of the priority one roads within the city’s limits. And once those are done, then our roadway crews will work on the priority two roads, the secondary roads.”

As the clean-up continues, Toma warns that conditions are still treacherous.

“Reports in from our community safety officers just advising that the roadways, even the ones that are clear do have some ice underneath. Along with some slush in some areas.”

Toma encourages drivers to use caution, especially when meeting other vehicles.

Highways in and around the Battlefords are all open with the exception of one. As of 4:00 p.m. Thursday, highway 376 between Highway 40 and 324 is still closed.

Battlefords Transit and Handi-Bus Accessible Transit service will remain closed for the rest of Thursday and Canada Post suspended Thursday delivery for the area.

As crews work to clean up from the first major snow event of the year, Environment Canada is forecasting more new snow to start falling before daybreak Saturday. The snow will continue through Saturday and temperatures are also expected to rise to a high of -1 celsius on Saturday.
