Application for third cannabis retail store approved in Meadow Lake

The City of Meadow Lake has approved an application from Canadian Greens to allow another cannabis retail store on Ninth Street West.

The motion to approve a discretionary use application for a store at 812 Ninth St. West was voted through during Monday evening’s city council meeting, allowing for the sale of a variety of cannabis products, from plant seeds to accessories. Mayor Merlin Seymour told meadowlakeNOW that the proper notifications were completed on time and there have been no responses in regards to a public hearing.

“We did have the opportunity for people to come for it and no one spoke for or against the application,” he said. “It met all the requirements of the building codes, zoning bylaws, etc.”

Seymour noted that while the city was originally allotted to have one store, legislation changed to allow more opportunities to have more businesses with cannabis retail sales. Currently, there’s only one business selling cannabis in operation, but council had previously approved the construction of a new store at 114 Ninth St. West, making Canadian Greens the third location in the community.

“Those two were the second and third retail sales in Meadow Lake after the ruling change from the government,” Seymour said.

The application falls under discretionary use, which has several requirements that it must conform to all relevant sections of the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw. These include having a demand for proposed use, being capable of being economically serviced by community infrastructure and not be detrimental to health, safety and general welfare of people residing within the vicinity.

Jonas Samson Middle School and Carpenter High School are 240 and 700 metres walking distance from the proposed store location, compared to the recently approved Spruce Buds store that sits 520 metres from Westview Park.

“It falls inside a commercial zone,” Seymour added.

Administration also noted that stores are also required to check the ID of anyone who enters the building.

Now that the application is approved, a development permit is being issued to Canadian Greens, who may also be required to apply for a building permit if structural changes to the building are planned.
