Battlefords-area First Nations volleyball players reflect on inaugural First Nations team at Canada Cup
The Volleyball Canada Cup took place July 21 to 26 in Regina. While most participating teams were provincial squads, this year’s tournament was the first to include a First Nations team, made up of Indigenous athletes from across Canada.
Two Saskatchewan athletes on the All Nations team were 18-year-olds Mia Peyachew of Red Pheasant Cree Nation and Akeira Anseth of Cut Knife. Both graduated from John Paul II Collegiate.
The Saskatchewan players had an opportunity to meet and play alongside athletes from several provinces and nations.
“We had many Métis players, we had Mi’kmaq from Newfoundland, and it was just such a cool, interesting thing to learn and see about everyone’s different backgrounds,” Peyachew said.
