Five arrested after vehicle flees from police

Dec 20, 2018 | 10:36 AM

Five people were arrested and are facing a number of charges after a vehicle fled and led police on a brief pursuit on the Thunderchild First Nation.

Turtleford RCMP said they were patrolling the First Nation on Dec. 19, when at around 1:30 a.m., officers attempted to pull over an unregistered vehicle. The vehicle did not stop and fled westbound towards Turtleford.

Before the vehicle was spotted travelling on the wrong side of the road at over 120 kilometres per hour, officers deployed a spike belt, but to no avail. After a short pursuit, the vehicle became stuck in a ditch near Turtle Lake.

Five adults in the vehicle, where a sawed-off firearm with ammunition was found, were arrested without incident.

Kelly Wapass, James Lewis, Lyndon Belly, Jonah Mitsuing, and one other suspect who was released but remains under investigation, are facing a number of charges that include possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, possessing a restricted firearm or prohibited weapon with ammunition without a licence or registration and common nuisance. Belly is facing additional charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and driving while disqualified. Mitsuing is also facing a charge of identity fraud.

All four are scheduled to appear in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Dec. 20.
