RCMP Report: Calls increase, incidents less serious

Aug 12, 2021 | 3:00 PM

Amidst the summer heat, Battlefords RCMP remain active in the community, even if incidents have been quieter than past months.

The detachment responded to 583 calls for service during the past week. This includes 46 charges for various driving offences, a pair of charges each for break and enters, impaired driving and traffic collisions, as well as 26 assault investigations. One case of note resulted in charges for an 18-year-old.

In the early hours of Aug. 5, officers responded to a report of a fight on 27th Street in Battleford. Upon arrival, the male suspect fled from officers, but was located and arrested a short time later. The arrest stemmed from an edged weapon the 18-year-old was found to be in possession of.

As a result, he is facing charges of disturbing the peace, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and resisting arrest. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said no assault charges have been laid at this time.

“The initial report of an assault was deemed to have been a fairly consensual fight between the two, which is why there have been no assault charges at this point,” he said.

The individual’s court date has not yet been set for this fall.

Investigations still ongoing

Tremblay said there were some instances of assault cases still being investigated and will likely become public interest down the road, but they are unwilling to provide details at this time. This is due to factors such as a lack of charges, interviews that are still required in the investigation and not wanting to potentially alert involved parties.

“We tend not to report on those where the victim does not want anything done…We do have a couple of investigations that are sensitive in nature, but we’re hesitant at this point to tip our hat to potential suspects.”

Another factor is protecting civilians.

“If we have something that falls under the line of domestic violence, sometimes we make a decision on releasing that information to not tip are hat and cause more violence within the home,” Tremblay said.

More stolen vehicles

There were six vehicle thefts in the area, an issue that Tremblay said they are continuing to encourage the public to stay vigilant on.

Two vehicles are still being searched for, this includes a red 2005 Ford F350 with a Saskatchewan License plate of 343-MBH and a black 2018 Chrysler 300 with a Saskatchewan license plate of 557-LQB. These were reported stolen from Bennett Crescent in North Battleford in the early morning hours of Aug. 5 and the 1300 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford on the afternoon of Aug. 7 respectively.

Police did manage to recover a vehicle stolen from the Wilkie area on Aug. 8 later at midnight in North Battleford. A 26-year-old male was arrested and charged with possession of property. Tremblay said the man has a criminal history, but there’s nothing to indicate that this theft was more than what was specified in the report, or that any of the thefts were related.

“There always a chance some of them are connected, but we don’t have individuals attached to multiple incidents right now,” he said.

Other files

Battlefords RCMP also had 20 Mental Health Act investigations and two missing persons cases. The Skyler Tinker search is ongoing in Saskatoon.

Tremblay said the community can expect the Battlefords Gang Task Force to remain active.

“That’s going to be a continued focus in the coming months,” he said.

Anyone who has any information on any incident mentioned in the report or in previous stories can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment directly, as well as calling 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
