Allen Sapp Gallery highlights local talent with Art Club display

May 18, 2021 | 4:00 PM

The Allen Sapp Gallery is holding a local art display until the beginning of next month.

Featuring the work of those in the Battlefords Art Club, the display is set up on the lower level of the Allen Sapp Gallery, and be open Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. until June 5.

Curator and manager of galleries with the City of North Battleford, Leah Garven said they often try to hold a local art display at least a couple of times a year to showcase some of the artists in the community and their work.

After much of last year’s programing was cancelled due to the pandemic, she said it’s been great to see what those in the Battlefords Art Club have been up to creatively.

“It’s really quite amazing that the artists have so much motivation on their own to try new things and it’s always exciting to see what they’ve done since I last saw their work,” Garven said. “Especially through the pandemic, there have been a lot of changes in moods and styles, so it’s just delightful to see how they keep motivated.”

Garven said those attending the exhibit can expect to see a range of different styles and art mediums on display, which is part of what makes these events special.

“There’s a wide range of work from watercolour to acrylic, to oil and ink drawings, and one girl is even using alcohol ink on different surfaces so it kind of reacts differently,” she said. “I think it’s really uplifting for people to see something new and something fresh, and I think it can give people a sense of hopefulness too.”

Garven said they hope people take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy a day out and see the artwork.

“It’s a beautiful environment and it’s very safe,” Garven said. “Looking at an art gallery is a great place to be when you’re looking to physically distance from other people, as it’s just the natural space for that kind of activity. We have COVID protocols in place, so people can get out for a walk, and come take a look at the beautiful art.”

This is the first local art exhibit of 2021 for the gallery. Next month will be their second, featuring works from the Artist Run Centre (ARC), which will open in June.

This event is traditionally hosted by the Chapel Gallery, but will take place at the Allen Sapp this year, as the Chapel Gallery remains closed at this time.
