Cut Knife set for municipal election

With days to go till municipalities across the province elect mayors and councillors, Cut Knife is prepared for a strong turnout in its 2020 race.

Around 50 residents came out for Wednesday evening’s advance poll. The number was slightly more than expected, according to Returning Electoral Officer Preston Olson.

“You can attribute some of that to COVID-19, just because of people wanting to get [their vote] in before the rush,” Olson said.

With a population of more than 500, a much larger number of votes is likely on Monday, when residents come to cast their ballots.

The town has two candidates in the mayoral race, incumbent Gwenn Kaye and challenger Daryl Sperling. Kaye, who also co-owns a retail business in town with her husband and works at the Cut Knife Health Complex, has served two terms as mayor. Sperling has served on town council for six years and also operates a business in town.

Seven council candidates are running this fall, including incumbents Doug Robertson, Jason Lloyd, Lyle Cronk and Fred Roschker. The challengers are Sandra Feser, Robert Keys and Lloyd Weeseekase.

Election Day Polls on Monday open in Cut Knife at the Town Office at 9 a.m., closing at 8 p.m.
