Judy Pruden hopes to be re-elected as Town of Battleford councillor

After completing her first four-year term, Judy Pruden hopes to retain her seat as a councillor in the upcoming Town of Battleford election.

“I just want to serve my home town where I have spent my entire life,” she said.

She brings to the table her experience on council, as well as her prior work experience in the health and safety, and accounting fields. She is currently employed on a casual basis with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. Married with two grown daughters, Pruden is focused on making Battleford a healthy, safe place for families to work and live.

If re-elected, among her priorities are fiscal responsibility, safety, growth and promoting tourism.

“The number one strategic priority of this council is safety,” Pruden said. “We realize the safety of our residents and our employees is at the top of our list, and I would just like to continue that.”

Among the projects in which she is proud to have been involved are the reservoir and pump house established at West Park to supply potable water to Poundmaker II, as well as the upgrades to the Battleford Arena. One large project underway currently is the Battleford Wastewater Treatment System Lagoon upgrade and expansion project to increase capacity.

Prudun said the town is also working on improving and expanding the walking path – a project she is especially glad to be included in.

“[It involves] finishing the loop of the walking path. So somebody can get on the path with either a bike or walking, and not have to get off and cut across the field or anything like that. They can go on one continuous ride,” she said.

Prudun is also pleased to be part of a project in progress to establish a free outdoor activity space for seniors, to be located in Battleford West.

She said it’s basically an area with exercise equipment for seniors to participate in some healthy stretching movements, and also be able to enjoy a little social interaction at the same time. Because the space will be located near the children’s playground, it also allows seniors to be near their grandchildren at the same time.

Creating community spirit by being active in the Battleford Community Spirit Group is also important to Pruden.

“We hosted very successful events such as the Street Festival, Lights of Joy and now the Lights of Hope,” she said.

Pruden is also interested in continuing to promote the history of Battleford and help increase tourism to the area, such as through a walking tour of the historic places and buildings in the area.

“Our history and tourism can be huge here, and I think we are just on the very edge of starting to tap into that,” she said.

Another initiative she is pleased to see move ahead is the town’s Tax Installment Payment Plan (TIIPS) program to enable people to pay their taxes through monthly installments as an option.

“It makes it a little easier to budget,” she said.

Pruden also is focused on economic development and ensuring the town is fiscal responsibility in her work with council. Downtown revitalization and expanding recreation opportunities for all ages is also on her list.

“Battleford is growing, and we need to be good stewards to ensure public services, roads, parks and recreation are growing as quickly to accommodate future growth, all in a transparent and fiscally responsible manner,” she said.
