Accessible washroom upgrades approved for Don Ross Centre

Jun 24, 2026 | 4:19 PM

People with mobility challenges will soon have easier access to one of North Battleford’s busiest public facilities after city council approved a washroom renovation project aimed at making the Don Ross Centre more accessible.

Council on Monday awarded a $351,990 contract to Meadow Contracting for washroom renovations at the Don Ross Centre and City Hall, while also approving a $17,000 contingency fund and reallocating money between the two projects to allow the work to proceed this year.

The project will replace washrooms that city officials said are not currently accessible, adding an accessible washroom and wider entrances at the Don Ross facility.

“The current one is not accessible whatsoever,” outgoing city manager Randy Patrick told council.

The upgrades are expected to benefit residents attending public meetings, community programs and events at the facility, as well as people using wheelchairs, walkers, mobility devices and strollers.

Part of the project is being funded through a provincial accessibility grant. Finance director Margarita Pena told council the grant was awarded to support renovations that improve accessibility through larger doors and accessible washroom facilities.

Council ultimately opted for a lower-cost design than originally proposed. The approved layout returns the facility to separate men’s and women’s washrooms while maintaining a dedicated accessible washroom.

Johansen said the design will feature doorless entrances into the men’s and women’s washrooms. The configuration offers practical advantages beyond accessibility.

“It keeps cleaning down, it also keeps abuse of the washrooms down,” he said.

The revised design reduced the Don Ross portion of the project by about $37,000 compared with the original concept included in the tender.

Council also approved transferring $77,870 from the Don Ross project budget to help cover costs associated with the City Hall washroom renovation.

Johansen said the City Hall portion requires demolition of existing floors and replacement of underground drainage infrastructure, making it more expensive than initially anticipated.

According to the contractor’s bid, work could begin about two weeks after the contract award and be completed approximately six weeks later.

Temporary portable washrooms will be provided at Don Ross Centre during the renovations, while City Hall users will have access to other washroom facilities within the building.
