AAA Stars hand out team awards at end of year banquet

Apr 26, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Battlefords AAA Stars held their year-end banquet this past weekend to thank the coaching staff, billets, family and volunteers, as well as hand out individual player awards for the season.

Team MVP was split between offensive juggernauts Adam Beckman and Ty Mosimann, who finished first and third in league scoring, respectively, with 78 and 66 points. Beckman was also named top forward and a first-team all-star by the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League last month. Mosimann won the Stars plus-minus award as well.

The coaches award went to graduating team captain Carson Robertson, who also won top defenceman. He was limited to 33 regular season games due to injury and his absence did not go unnoticed.

The Wallin award, for community involvement, when to defenceman Dallen Erickson, who also took home the Welykochy award, given to a player who balances hockey, school and good citizenship.

The rookie of the year award went to the goaltender Carter Serhyenko, who posted a 10-11 record and .900 save percentage in his first season in midget AAA.

The Stars named Tyson Tuck the most improved player and Mathew Flodell the most underrated player, for the second straight year.

There are a total of nine graduating players who won’t be returning next season due to age: Erickson, Flodell, Ian Hillis, Mosimann, Damon McKenzie, Robertson, Logan Spence, Trey Stocker, and Jackson Tonnies.

Stars spring camp took place this past weekend with over 100 players taking part. There are still forward spots up for grabs, which will be determined at main camp in August.
