North Stars inconsistent in 7-4 win over Terriers

Oct 29, 2017 | 2:12 AM

It was a fairly close back and forth affair between the Battlefords North Stars and Yorkton Terriers on Saturday night, and perhaps it shouldn’t have been.

In the end, the North Stars prevailed 7-4 to improve to 10-0-1 this season, but at times they had trouble with the 3-12-2 Terriers, despite outshooting them 53-24.

“I thought tonight we let a lot of those bad habits squeak into our game compared to last night,” North Stars assistant coach Boyd Wakelin said. “[Last night] we put together a pretty solid effort. Guys were working hard for the full 60. Tonight, I didn’t see that as much.

“I wasn’t really happy with the overall effort tonight.”

Inconsistent was a good word to describe Saturday.

The North Stars didn’t start strong and found themselves trailing 1-0 after an bad early turnover.

Then they woke up, which lead to a 4-1 lead halfway through the second.

Yorkton made it 4-2, before MacGregor Sinclair made it 5-2 for the North Stars.

But Aiden Bulych’s second career goal 6:13 into the third got Yorkton to within one at 5-4.

Finally, Sinclair and Matthias Urbanski scored after that to put the game out of reach art 7-4.

“We started to pick it up, we’d get a few goal lead and then kind of fall back into the bad habits. Reaching, not communicating,” Wakelin said. “It’s more mental mistakes. I don’t think guys were not trying. I thought they were working hard. It’s just you go out there and get a few goals and it kind of seems easy. But the only reason it seems easy is because you were working hard to get those goals. I think we scored one pretty goal.

“Five of the other six others were just going to the net and scrambles in front and working and winning those pucks battles. Once we start getting away from that, we start letting teams back into the game.”

On the offensive side of things, Battlefords did a better job of finishing.

On Friday, they scored five goals on 72 shots. On Saturday, they scored seven on 53 shots.

But they weren’t taking smart shots early on, as Wakelin said the team counted nine missed shots high over the net in the first period alone.

“We talked early before the game about smart shots. Not shooting at his glove,” Wakelin said. “In junior hockey, you shoot high at a goalie’s glove from outside the top of the circle, he’s probably going to make that save nine out of 10 times.

“I thought they did a good job after the first to start throwing them low at his pads. You start tiring the goalie out when he’s got to make a pad save and then there’s a rebound sitting there and he’s got to make one or two more after.”

The top line was the driving force offensively, as they combined for a ridiculous 10 points.

Sinclair had two goals and three assists to bring his season total to 18 points, Huebner had one goal and one assist to bring his season total to 16, and Young continued his season-long point-streak with a goal and two assists to bring his point total to 27, good for second in the league.

Levi Kleiboer also stood out on defence, registering a goal and two assists to bring his point total to 13 in just nine games. His 1.44 points-per-game is the best in the league.

Kolby Matthews also picked up another win to bring his record to a perfect 6-0. He made 20 saves in the win. It was his first game this season where he has allowed more than two goals.

The North Stars will hit the road for two games in two nights in the middle of next week, as they’ll visit Kindersley on Tuesday and then Humboldt on Wednesday.
