The Crusaders played in three tournament this year leading up to regionals.

They won their home tournament way back during the first week of school and then went 1-2 at two other tournaments, one in Yorkton and one in Prince Albert, where they often faced bigger schools who they won’t have to worry about at the 2A provincials.

The other good thing leading into the weekend is the experience JP brings to the field, as some players have been to provincials before.

“Twenty-five per cent I’d say [of our team] were there when they were Grade 9s and 10s,” Fox said. “It’s an experienced, older team so they have a lot of expereince of going down and still coming back.”

The last time the Crusaders were at provincials was two years ago when they lost both games.

This time around, a deep roster could pay dividends.

“The biggest strength is having depth of Grade 11s and 12s,” Fox said. “We have 17 guys. Six of them that are on the bench could easily be starters.

“We’re constantly subbing, keeping everybody fresh, and it pays off late in games.”

Fox said the focus heading into the weekend will be on staying positive.

“The biggest thing is our attitude,” he said. “If we’re positive, positive things will happen. And our focus. We have to be focused for 90 minutes. We’re not used to playing 90 minutes. If you give up 10 to 15 minutes each half then that gives the team 10 to 15 minutes to pounce on us.”

The first game for the Crusaders is set for 11 a.m. on Friday against Notre Dame. Their next game will be at 3 p.m., regardless of a win or loss. There are eight total teams in the 2A provincial bracket: JP, Notre Dame, Martensville, Humboldt, Kipling, Luther (Regina), Sheldon Williams (Regina), and the hosts, Sacred Heart (Yorkton).

“The boys are excited,” Fox added. “I think they want to go down there today. But it doesn’t work like that. Still have to go to school!”
