AAA Stars split games on opening weekend

Oct 2, 2017 | 12:00 PM

There was both good and bad from the Battlefords AAA Stars in their opening weekend at the league showcase in Warman.

The Stars began the year by allowing 53 shots on Friday in a 6-2 loss to the Notre Dame Hounds, but bounced back on Saturday morning with a 7-3 win over the Notre Dame Argos.

In Friday’s loss, the Hounds notched three power play goals and had a 6-0 lead right before the second intermission. Luke Mylymok led Notre Dame with a pair of goals. He was one of four Hounds players to tally two points in the game.

Stars forward Damon McKenzie scored two goals late in Friday’s contest, but by then the game was well out of reach.

Joseph Young made 47 saves in the loss for Battlefords.

On Saturday, the flurry of goals didn’t begin until the third.

Matthew Flodell and Luke Fennig got the Stars out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes, before Flodell scored again early in the second to make it a 3-0 game. The Argos got on the board right before the second intermission to make it 3-1 after 40 minutes.

In the third, the Stars struck three times in a span of 4:11 to break the game wide open, increasing their lead to 6-1. Flodell completed his hat-trick while Ty Mosimann added a pair of goals. The Argos would then score two to make it 6-3 before McKenzie made it 7-3 in the final two minutes. Just one of the Stars seven goals came on the man advantage.

Carter Serhyenko picked up his first career midget AAA win on Saturday, making 27 saves on 30 shots.

The Stars will travel to Swift Current next weekend for a pair of games against the Legionnaires. Swift Current is 2-2 this season, following wins over the Saskatoon Blazers and Tisdale Trojans, and losses to Moose Jaw and Prince Albert.

Those two games are set for Saturday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 8 at 12:45 p.m.
