NURSE OF THE MONTH

Battlefords campaign shines spotlight on nurses making a difference

May 6, 2026 | 5:05 PM

A new campaign in the Battlefords is helping to bring recognition to nurses who go above and beyond every day.

“Nursing in general isn’t easy… sometimes we don’t get recognition for what we do,” said Alex, a local nurse who helped start the campaign. “I made this hoping that this would give the nurses recognition and the push to keep moving forward despite the bad days.”

The ‘Nurse of the Month’ campaign has been running since Jan., with one registered nurse, registered psychiatric nurse, or nurse practitioner awarded each month.

“They’ve been extremely thankful and grateful. One even said, ‘this is exactly what I needed.’ She was actually considering quitting nursing. She said that receiving this award and this recognition helps her keep going.”

The first recipient was Macey, a nurse who works in Battlefords Union Hospital in the palliative unit.

“Initially, I was very shocked,” she wrote in a statement to battlefordsNOW. “I work alongside many amazing nurses who are all very deserving of this recognition. I wouldn’t be able to be the nurse I am without them. I am very honored and grateful to whoever nominated me.”

She agreed that the work done in healthcare facilities is typically under appreciated, sometimes due to policies with privacy and patient confidentiality.

“Many people don’t understand what nursing care really entails. With saying this, I wouldn’t trade my career choice for the world and love what I do. But by recognizing nurses monthly, it’s a small pat on the back to say, ‘Hey we see you, we appreciate you, and keep doing what you’re doing,’” Macey said.

For now, this campaign only includes the Battlefords area, but Alex said surrounding areas have reacted positively to the idea and will join in soon.

“Any co-worker, patient, or patient’s family can nominate them. If we get more than one nomination, it’s by random draw. Then the nominations that were picked for that month just roll over and keep going into the random draw.”
