Rush beat Roughnecks 15-11 for three-game streak

Feb 5, 2017 | 7:30 AM

The Saskatchewan Rush are winners of three straight and tied for first in their division thanks to a 15-11 win over the Calgary Roughnecks in National Lacrosse League (NLL) action last night.

With their first road win of the season, the Rush improved to 3-2 after starting the season with back-to-back losses.

The game, much like the pre-season matchup in December, was back and forth with the two teams trading the lead throughout.

At the end of the first quarter the Rush were up 6-5 with Mark Matthews and Ben McIntosh each scoring two goals while Jeremy Thompson and Matthew Dinsdale both had markers for Saskatchewan.

Heading into the half, Calgary held the lead at 8-7, with the Rush goal scored by Adrian Sorichetti.

Calgary hasn’t lost when leading at halftime this season, but the Roughnecks were completely shut out in the third quarter as the Rush overcame the one-goal deficit at the break.

Rookie Matt Hossack, playing in his first game of the season, brought Saskatchewan even with a strong solo dash through the open floor before firing a shot behind Calgary goalie Frank Scigliano. The Rush then took the lead when Matthews strong-armed his way past the defence and put a low shot into the net to make it 9-8.

Saskatchewan took a 10-8 lead just over a minute into the fourth as Adam Jones collected the 200th goal of his NLL career. After a brief Calgary rally tied the game 10-10, the Rush took the lead for the final time. McIntosh collected a hat-trick goal when he drove to the net and got his shot to trickle in, and only 54 seconds later Robert Church rifled a shot over Scigliano’s shoulder on a breakaway set up by Chris Corbeil’s stretch pass.

Jones then put the Rush up 13-10 as his long-range shot found the five-hole. The Roughnecks inched closer with a power-play goal from Dane Dobbie, but right off the ensuing faceoff Nik Bilic snared a loose ball, went in all alone and gunned a high shot into the net. With just over three minutes remaining the Rush extended their lead further thanks to Matthews’s fourth goal of the game.

In net, Aaron Bold made a season-high 46 saves in net for the Rush.

Saskatchewan’s next game is Feb. 12 on the road, when they take on the Rochester Knighthawks.
