Battlefords Minor Baseball preps for start of the season

Ball season is just around the corner and Battlefords Minor baseball is ready for it.

18U AA Beavers head coach Dean Dimmers is looking forward to having a strong team.

“Our strength, once we get rolling through the season, I really think it will be our pitching. We have some great arms. I think our bats will be there. Defensively, that will come as well.”

The team will open their season in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League (SPBL) against the Regina Blue Jays in Regina with a two-game set on May 2, before a pair of games on May 3. They return home on May 9 for their home opener against the East Central Red Sox at the Beaver Lion Stadium.

In one division younger, the 15U AA Beavers are at the Blue Jay Ball Diamond on May 9 to open the season against the East Central Dodgers.

To prepare, teams in the organization have been utilizing the new indoor facility that recently opened in partnership with the Boys and Girls club in North Battleford.  It has room for drills as well as batting cages, mounds, and everything needed for teams to practice indoors. Dimmers said there may be some scenarios where teams may prefer to practice in the facility instead of on the field.

“It’s a great addition to our ball community,” said Dimmers. “If, through the summer, the weather isn’t cooperating, it’s available. Then come fall or the winter months, (people) that just want to go and do some baseball activity, it’s available for that and can carry right into next year.”

The organization has been running camps at the facility for all of their teams over the past few weeks in addition to open gym sessions and drop-in times.

“As more understand what the capabilities of it are, it’s going to get used more and more.”

Dimmers expressed his excitement for all of the teams this year as the season is just days away.

“It’s the greatest time of the year. We should be outside enjoying nice weather and hopefully that comes along. It’s such a quick season, so you try to enjoy as much as you can and looking for big things this year.”

The SPBL regular season begins in early May and runs until mid-July.
