Nov 3, 2026 | 5:00 PM

Family, friends and fellow soldiers will gather in Prince Albert on Wednesday to honour Pte. Shaun Farrell, with a livestream allowing the public to watch the military service.

The service will begin at 11 a.m. on Nov. 4 at the Prince Albert Armoury on Exhibition Drive. A link to the YouTube livestream can be found below.

Farrell, 23, was one of four Canadian Armed Forces members killed Oct. 17 when a fast-moving grass fire overtook soldiers during a training exercise at CFB Wainwright in Alberta.

He served with the Edmonton-based 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and was preparing for an overseas deployment.

Born in South Africa, Farrell moved to Prince Albert with his family in 2017. During an October news conference, his family remembered a young man who had dreamed of becoming a soldier since childhood and found a sense of belonging in the military.

His remains returned to Prince Albert on Oct. 24, accompanied by an escort of police and emergency vehicles. A community vigil followed the next day at Memorial Square.

Wednesday’s service will bring together loved ones, dignitaries, members of Farrell’s battalion and other Canadian Armed Forces personnel.

The family has requested privacy. Organizers said the complete service will be livestreamed to allow people to pay their respects remotely.

The fire also killed Sgt. Morgan Wong, 26, of Edmonton; Pte. Aidan Goulding, 23, of North Vancouver; and Pte. Hayden Lykkemark, 19, of Langley, B.C.

Wong’s funeral was held Oct. 25 in Edmonton. Goulding’s military service is scheduled for Nov. 8 at the Seaforth Armoury in Vancouver, according to the Canadian Jewish News. Public funeral or memorial service details for Private Hayden Lykkemark have not been publicly announced.
