ICE officers shot a man in New York because they believed they were in danger, official says
WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal officers who shot a man driving with his young son in New York believed they were in danger because the Dominican national crashed his car into their vehicles as they tried to arrest him, senior immigration officials said Friday.
But those agents weren’t aware that the man’s 5-year-old son was with him in the car on Thursday when they opened fire at the vehicle, said Marcos Charles, the head of enforcement and removal operations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The child was not hurt. The driver, 28, was shot “superficially” in the neck, Charles said. He was treated at a hospital then taken into federal custody.
New York City police security cameras released Friday recorded the start of the encounter, but did not capture the shooting.
One video released by the department Friday shows two immigration officers wearing civilian garb running up to the vehicle with their guns drawn and pointed at the driver. As one officer bashes the barrel of his gun against the car’s windows, the driver pulls away and out of view of the camera. A second video taken from a different angle shows people scrambling out of the way on the sidewalk.
