Undefeated Sharks confident ahead of weekend matchups vs Weyburn

Oct 1, 2026 | 5:14 PM

After combining for just two losses all season in 2025-26, the Battlefords WPD Ambulance Sharks will have a difficult time topping, or even matching that performance this year.

However, the Sharks have started the campaign in the best way possible, posting a 3-0-0-0 record (W-L-OTW-OTL) with two wins over the Notre Dame Hounds and a road victory over the Saskatoon Stars.

“I think the way we’ve done it has been positive. We’ve put a lot of shots on net. We’ve generated. We’ve minimized some scoring chances and kept teams off the scoresheet. From that perspective, things have been good,” Sharks head coach Nolan Horbach said.

Rookie Hannah Weseen leads the Sharks with two goals and five assists for seven points through the first three games. Julia Poole and Charleigh Johnston have three goals apiece, tied for the league lead.

Horbach said the team’s most productive line has been Weseen, Johnston and Aliyah Galloway.

“They seem to be able to find each other and are willing to go to the front of the net and all those other places where you’re going to get rewarded,” Horbach said.

“With Hannah, she also has an incredible shot, and she can get it away quick. I think she can score from pretty much anywhere. If it doesn’t go in, there’s a lot of opportunities and rebounds that are laying around there.”

While the team is playing well, Horbach knows there is still plenty of work to do.

“It’s important for us to realize we’re still a young team. I think it’s about understanding a little bit more about game management. When we’re up at certain times, it’s not so much the goal we’re chasing, but just looking after our own end and the little things,” he said.

“There are times when the only reason we get in trouble is because of something we did, and we could have made it a little bit easier on ourselves. That’ll come. Different experiences and different situations allow us to grow that way.”

This weekend, the Sharks welcome the Weyburn Gold Wings to town. Weyburn handed the Sharks their only regulation loss last season, so Horbach knows a tough test lies ahead.

“They have really good goaltending, and they have kids who can put the puck in the net. They’re going to press. I think it’s a great early test for us again. We had success against them at the Fire Starter, but it could have gone either way. It’ll force us to do the little things right and play the right way. I think that’s a good thing for us early on.”

Puck drop is set for 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday as the Sharks host the Gold Wings for a pair of weekend matchups at Battleford Arena.
