Charge stayed against one accused in North Battleford taxi driver death

Proceedings have been stayed against one of two men charged following the March death of a North Battleford taxi driver, while a first-degree murder case against the other accused continues.

The latest court information for Garren Baptiste, who was charged with manslaughter and forcible confinement, lists the case as a “stay of proceedings.” A stay halts the prosecution and is not an acquittal.

Kojac Adams, who is charged with first-degree murder, is scheduled to appear in North Battleford provincial court for case management on Sept. 16. Case management is used to organize proceedings and address issues before a case moves further through the court process.

Adams is also charged with forcible confinement, assault with a weapon and pointing a firearm. The allegations against him have not been proven in court.

Adams and Baptiste were both 19 when the charges were laid.

The charges stem from an RCMP investigation into events at the Hitching Post Motel on March 13.

Police found a 30-year-old man in the motel parking lot. He died at the scene. RCMP said another person was assaulted, had a firearm pointed at them and was confined to a motel room before being taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP did not publicly identify the man who died beyond his age. Crown Cab owner Haris Korath identified him as Davinder Singh and said Singh had been dispatched to the motel for a pickup. Korath also said Singh was shot three times.

Singh’s death shook Crown Cab, with Korath saying shortly afterward that some drivers had decided to leave their jobs because they were afraid.

“We are in a tough spot right now. Nobody wants to work. We don’t know how to keep up the business.”

The company later announced plans to install cameras in all of its vehicles. At the time, only some taxis were equipped with cameras. Crown Cab also said passengers would be required to place backpacks in the trunk before entering a vehicle.
