Battlefords Sharks’ Brooke Weber talks NCAA Division I commitment

“I knew where I wanted to go after doing all the research on these schools, so why put it off any longer? I just felt really confident in my decision and super excited about it. I thought, ‘Why drag the process on any longer?’”

Asked whether anything specific about the school caught her attention, Weber said she was impressed from top to bottom.

“I felt like it was just a good mix of everything that I wanted in a college. Of course, there are going to be pros and cons, but Duluth really checked most of my boxes,” she said.

“I really love the people who work there. I loved where it was. They have an amazing history of hockey there, so I just felt it was a great fit, and when I went there, it felt like home.”

Now that Weber has committed, she feels not having to worry about the process will ease some mental pressure as she turns her focus to the Sharks for the next two seasons.

“Something that’s always in the back of your mind is trying to get noticed by colleges while helping your team win. Now that it’s over with, it feels like pressure off my shoulders.”

Weber also discussed plans to stay in contact with the school as she prepares for her arrival in 2028.

“The coaches have said, ‘We’ll help you along the way. We’ll talk about feedback and everything, and we’ll just continue to develop your game.’ It’s really nice having them there as well, always talking and giving you feedback on what you can improve in your game so that, by the time you get there, you’re as ready as possible.”

Weber has the stats and accolades to back up her commitment. Last season, she had over a point-per-game, scoring 31 points (16 goals, 15 assists) in 30 games in the regular season. She added five points (3 goals, 2 assists) in four playoff games in their championship run, and co-won the team Rookie of the Year award with goaltender Aura Sembalerus.

The Sharks forward hopes university will not be the end of her hockey journey, with the Professional Women’s Hockey League in her sights.

“Duluth has a great group of alumni who have made it to the PWHL and national teams. I trust the coaches to give me the best chance I possibly can, and I also trust myself to give myself the best possible chance,” she said.

“For them to help me improve and just be the best player that I possibly can be when it comes time for the PWHL draft, if that’s in the cards for me.”

The University of Minnesota Duluth currently has 12 alumni on PWHL rosters heading into the season.

With her commitment secured, Weber will turn her focus back to the Sharks as they begin their season Sept. 26 against the Notre Dame Hounds.
