Battlefords RCMP donate $8,500 to local organizations

Stephens said the organizations were selected based on their ongoing work with the RCMP and their efforts to help build safer communities.

“We’ve already put some thought into next year and trying to make sure we want to be fair, we want to make sure we give everyone a chance, but we’re trying to link it, the organizations that work with us directly with what we’re trying to do to make safer communities for everyone.”

Stephens said the fundraiser also gives officers a chance to show the community the people behind the uniform.

“Being a police officer and helping people on a day-to-day is great. Being able to do something above and beyond an extra like this where you can actually give back to the community and host an event where they come out and interact with you as well; it feels just good on so many different levels. To be able to interact with people and have them really see that there’s humans behind the badge.”

Paula Kulyk, second vice-president of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 70, said she was surprised and grateful to receive the donation.

“As a non-profit, the Legion, that money will be put to good use for the veterans and their families. So grateful to our hardworking police department,” she said.

Kulyk said the money will help the Legion support veterans and their families with medical and financial needs.

Sarita Bhatat of Battlefords Victim Services said the organization will use its donation to provide resources to clients affected by crime.

“We help with clients that are affected by various kinds of crimes. We will be using this money to provide various resources to our clients,” she said.

Those resources can include transportation or food for clients who may not have eaten for an extended period.

Doug Fehr, chairperson of Battlefords Citizens on Patrol, said the organization’s donation will likely go toward advanced training for its patrollers.

“We have a conference coming up in the middle of Oct. In Regina and obviously being in Regina, it’s a little more expensive to get there,” Fehr said. “The conference is focused on patroller training, knowledge of crime awareness, and knowledge of current crime trends. It fits very well into what we do in the Battlefords.”

Battlefords RCMP are hoping to raise $10,000 through next year’s fundraiser, with the proceeds again going toward local organizations.
