Start of school brings reminder for drivers to slow down

With students returning to class, North Battleford drivers are being reminded to use extra caution around schools, sidewalks and crosswalks.

Motorists are being asked to slow down early, put their phones away and be prepared to stop at intersections, school entrances and marked crossings.

Community Safety Officers will monitor and patrol school zones as students return. The City of North Battleford Fire Department will also be visible at schools throughout the city to remind motorists that classes are back in session.

Drivers must stop at least five metres from the front or rear of a school bus when its safety lights are flashing and the stop arm is extended. Failing to stop can result in a $360 fine and four demerit points.

The city’s school zone speed limit is 30 km/h from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Officials said speeding in school zones remains a serious safety concern, with fines starting at $300 and increasing for drivers travelling more than 20 km/h over the limit.

For example, a driver travelling 50 km/h in a school zone could face a $310 fine and three demerit points.

Drivers caught holding, viewing or using a device while driving can face a $580 fine for a first offence, $1,400 for a second offence and $2,100 for a third offence, along with four demerit points.

Officials are encouraging drivers to leave extra space, watch for students near crosswalks and school buses, and be prepared for sudden movements.

“Let’s make it safe for our children,” the city said.

Students are back to school on Sept. 2.
