‘It’s a massive help’: $100K donation supports Battlefords Humane Society

“We’re going to use it to pay down a large amount of our debt on the building still.”

The newer shelter has allowed the Humane Society to expand the number of animals it can care for at one time. The former facility could accommodate about 80 animals at capacity, while the current building has room for roughly 130.

That space continues to be well used.

“It is always full. It’s pretty rare that we have like a ton of open space. We’re not over capacity at the moment, but we’re definitely full.”

While animals continue to come through the shelter’s doors, Groff said adoptions remained steady throughout the summer.

There have also been some recent successes for animals that had been waiting longer to find homes.

“We had Parsnip and Tac, who were both over a year that got adopted in the last month; so, we’re pretty happy about that.”

The Humane Society continues to rely on community support for its day-to-day operations. Donations of animal food, blankets and towels can be dropped off at the shelter, along with monetary contributions.

For an organization that rarely sees its kennels empty, Groff said support from donors remains important in helping staff meet the ongoing demand.
