While the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) represents a step up in competition from the VIJHL, Unger is looking forward to adapting to its different style of play.

“I know the SJ is a super physical league, so I’m excited for the physicality and the pace.” 

Unger said physicality is not one of his strengths, but he is looking forward to improving that part of his game during the season. He identified his speed, vision and playmaking as strengths and described himself as a two-way defenceman. 

North Stars head coach and general manager Connor Logan said he was impressed by what Unger’s former coaches had to say about his work ethic. 

“Two of his previous coaches said nothing but good things about the kid. That’s what got us more intrigued. We watched more film on him, really dissected his game and felt like there’s a legit player here who can grow into an elite defenceman.” 

Logan said the transition from the VIJHL to the SJHL can be tough, but he is confident Unger will be able to handle it. 

“He’s going to have to make another adjustment here. Like any young player, they have to take their game and adjust to that stress and try to apply themselves. Anytime you take a step, the goal is to maintain the player that you are and what has made you successful, but adjust to a higher level,” Logan said. 

“For him, that’s going to be speed, physicality and then making those puck touches just a little bit quicker. I think he’s going to be able to do that.” 

Off the ice, Logan also had high praise for Unger’s character. 

“He’s a great kid. He’s very easy to talk to. That was one of the things that stood out to me from my conversations with Ethan. He’s easygoing and just a calm kid. I’m excited to get him with the group and watch him start to evolve.” 

Unger joins forward Michiel Leenders and goaltender Nathan Claydon as the third acquisition made by the North Stars this offseason.
