New season of Sask. TV show features P.A. fire investigator

A Prince Albert man who responded to some of the biggest fires in northern Saskatchewan is part of the new season of a television show documenting their journey.

Guardians of the North, which began its second season on Tuesday night, chronicles the story of First Nation first responders, fire investigators, and other crews who battle fires and protect homes and residents in the boreal forests of northern Canada.

The first season of the show was a big success as emergency personnel from around Prince Albert, La Ronge, and other communities were featured.

Along with filming Indigenous crews fighting fires, the crew had the chance to follow search and rescue missions when they visited Muskoday First Nation for season one.

Season two will feature Prince Albert’s Tyler Harrison, a fire investigator with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA).

He told paNOW that while it was a surreal experience, he couldn’t let it distract him from doing his regular job.

“It kind of adds another layer to it,” he said. “It made you kind of really think about how other people, how they might want to actually look at your job differently.”

Harrison mentioned the show captured what fire investigators like him were doing when one of the biggest fires erupted in the North last season.

“We had managed to figure out exactly how a fire started and bring a lot of relief to the community that was up there,” he said. “So, it was one of our better investigations that we actually got on film this year.”

In a news release, Wavelength Entertainment, who produced the show said with the unprecedented wildfires in 2023, sharing the stories of those who responded has been remarkable.

“It’s a side of the emergency services that a lot of people don’t get to see,” added Harrison. “This series is a fantastic way to kind of get that information out to people about what’s actually happening.”

The show airs every Tuesday at 10 p.m. on City TV Saskatchewan. The show will then be broadcast nationally on Saturday mornings.

Guardians of the North receives funding from Creative Saskatchewan’s Feature Film and TV Production grant. The second season’s $280,000 investment is estimated to result in $1.2 million in positive economic impacts for the province.
