RCMP Report: Multiple assault suspects arrested in North Battleford

Nov 18, 2021 | 2:38 PM

A 30-year-old man was arrested last week after committing assault and killing a pet rabbit, one of multiple incidents dealt with by Battlefords RCMP that resulted charges being laid to male suspects.

Police received the call on Saturday, detailing an assault at a residence on the 1800 block of 93rd Street, where the suspect was on conditions to stay away from the victim. While there committing the assault, he also reportedly damaged property and allegedly threw a pet rabbit against a wall.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the no-contact order stemmed from previous incidents with the victim.

“The assumption is that he went back targeting the victim again,” Tremblay said. “The charges are pretty serious and we’re hoping there are some consequences to them.”

After being located and arrested later on, Byron Wahobin was charged with several additional charges, including assault with a weapon, resisting arrest, mischief to property, failing to comply with the conditions of a release order and injuring or endangering the life of an animal. He appeared in court on Monday.

Another report of a serious incident involved suspected child abuse. On Tuesday afternoon, police were called to a residence in North Battleford where a child was found to have suspicious minor injuries. Tremblay said the swift investigation showed the injuries were incurred by an assault and the arrest of a 26-year-old male was made.

“That’s not always the case with these types of cases, but this one went quickly,” he said.

Police dealt with another serious case on Nov. 10, when they were called to a residence on the 1600 block of 102nd Street in North Battleford. Upon arrival a female victim in her 20s was found with injuries to her face and head, after reportedly being assaulted by a 19-year-old male who was known to her. The accused, wielding a knife, also allegedly threatened the victim before fleeing the scene.

“Her injuries appeared to be from the physical assault, but there was still a threat using the knife,” Tremblay said.

The suspect, Isaac Pritchard of North Battleford was located a short time later that evening at another residence and was taken into custody after struggling with police. He was held until his first appearance in court on Friday, Nov. 12. Other charges include possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and assault with a weapon.

Tremblay said Pritchard was known to police, but not for this sort of incident.

“These are much more serious charges,” he said.

Other cases

The detachment dealt with 460 total calls for service the past week, including eight vehicle theft investigations.

Two arrests were carried out in these cases, one of a 27-year-old male from Spiritwood charged with possession of a stolen vehicle on Saulteaux First Nation on Nov. 11. In the other incident, 28-year-old Johnathan Semaganis of Sweet Grass First Nation was charged with the theft of a motor vehicle on Saturday, which was recovered in Delmas Tuesday afternoon. He appeared in court on Wednesday.

Battlefords RCMP are still searching for two stolen vehicles. The first, a grey 2013 Ford F150 (Saskatchewan license 573-KTP), was reported stolen from a residence on the Red Pheasant First Nation on Nov. 11. The second, a white 2011 GMC Sierra (Saskatchewan license 412-MGE), was reported stolen sometime between Nov. 6-11 from the 1000 block of 107th Street in North Battleford.

In another investigation, officers seized a number of weapons from a vehicle previously reported for traffic violations and charged a 20-year-old woman and a 46-year-old male with a number of weapons offences. The weapons seized included a baton, handcuffs and a BB gun which had been modified to look like a real firearm. The accused are set to make their first appearances in court on Dec. 20.

In addition, the detachment had 21 Mental Health Act investigations, four break and enters investigations, 19 traffic collisions, 88 various traffic charges and charged three people with impaired driving. There were also four missing persons cases, two of which are active.

Anyone with information on any incident can contact the detachment, 310-RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
