Case for accused facing charge in Cindy MacKay death adjourned

A man facing a charge in the death of Cindy MacKay last year had his case adjourned in North Battleford provincial court Monday to schedule a preliminary hearing date.

Michael MacKay, 38, is charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife Cindy MacKay of the Meota area.

He was arrested March 18, 2021, in Warman.

Defence lawyer Nicholas Stooshinoff who appeared in court by phone Monday apologized for missing his scheduled call-in time for court for the MacKay case on May 14, saying he was focused on another pressing matter at the time. As a result, Judge Murray Pelletier cancelled the bench warrant to hold that was issued. If MacKay or his legal counsel did not appear for the next court date, May 17, a warrant would have then been activated for the arrest of MacKay, who was released on bail in April.

The case is now adjourned to June 1 at 10 a.m. to set a preliminary inquiry date.

Police reported, Cindy MacKay was in medical distress on Feb. 7, 2020, and transported to hospital. She later died in hospital on Feb. 12, 2020.

The allegation against the accused has not been proven in court.
