Arrest made after armed vehicle robbery in North Battleford

Oct 11, 2019 | 9:00 AM

Officers in the Battlefords have arrested one man after he stole a vehicle at knife and gunpoint from someone giving him a ride.

At around 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 9, the RCMP were called to an armed robbery around 110 St. and Diefenbaker Dr.

Police said the situation started at a business on 17 Ave. and 101 St. when a man asked for a ride across the city.

The situation changed when the man pulled out a knife and a handgun. He demanded the driver and passenger get out and hand over everything they had before he drove off. No one was injured.

RCMP soon identified 29-year-old David Soonias of the Moosomin First Nation as the suspect. He was arrested in the community on Oct. 10 and remains in custody.

He will appear in court this morning on several weapons and driving-related charges.

RCMP said further charges involving Soonias will come as officers continue to investigate.
