Work continues on Humboldt Broncos crash site

Motorists will experience delays if they’re travelling through the intersection of Highways 35 and 335, otherwise known as the Armley Corner.

The province is continuing work on the intersection after receiving an engineering review of the intersection in December 2018, following the Humboldt Broncos bus crash in April of 2018 that killed 16 people and injured 13 others.

There’s already been some work done at the intersection including painting some new lines, and oversized signage like stop signs and ‘stop ahead’ signs that were added in March. Now work on the specific roadway design continues.

“The rumble strips, the shoulder widening, access to the new roadside memorial, as well as the new Cargill access road,” Steve Shaheen with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure said. “In addition, there’s the construction of a new parking path and walking path that will be completed this month, and the old gravel roadway will be removed as part of this project.”

The construction has been underway since the beginning of October, and is expected to continue until the end of the month, weather permitting. Shaheen said this project is part of the five-year plan by the province, investing $65 million into the safety of intersections province-wide. This portion costs about $2.7 million.

From the recommendations on the engineering review, a total of 13 things were mentioned. The only piece that isn’t happening yet is the relocation of the power lines in the area.

Shaheen also stressed for motorists to be careful in the area.

“Whenever you’re driving through a construction zone, please pay extra attention, watch for people working in the area,” he said. “Slow down, and use extra caution, we want to save lives out there.”
