Town Hall to see more brick-work upgrades while weather stays favourable

The Town Hall in Battleford will continue to see improvements after councillors approved a $20,000 brick and masonry repairs to the building’s exterior.

Mayor Ames Leslie said it is a good opportunity for the workers to continue with the project.

“It is just another extension instead of them having to come back next summer and do some more,” he said. “They are finished a little earlier this year. They are here already. We might as well have them keep going until the weather doesn’t allow them to do any more.”

The mayor said the town planned for the crews to complete the work over time, however they will now be able to finish two years of that work in 2019 “if Mother Nature allows it” since the firm has been making good progress.

Funds for the additional cost will come from the town’s reserves.

Regina firm Brxton Masonry Inc. already completed previous repairs for the project at a cost of about $71,291 so the added work will bring the total to $91,291.

Brick repointing work improves the external part of the mortar joints in the building to protect the structure.

The joints can wear down over time leaving the building more susceptible to water seepage in the spaces where the decay has occurred.

“It’s looking better already,” Leslie said. ”It definitely will lengthen the [life] of this building as well.”

According to CAO John Enns-Wind’s report it is expected that no further repointing will need to be done in 2020 with this work’s completion.

Enns-Wind said structural engineer Brad Taylor, of JC Kenyon Engineering, inspected the initial repointing after it was completed and was pleased with the work.

The CAO recommended the town approve covering the added cost of up to $20,000 for the project.
