Stars start season hot in 7-1 route of Klippers

The Battlefords North Stars kicked off their regular season with a bang Friday night in Kindersley, taking home a decisive 7-1 victory over the Klippers at the West Central Events Centre to open the season.

Seven different players scored for the Stars on the night, as each of Matthew Fletcher, Dylan Esau, Quintin Loon-Stewardson, Kaden Boser, Brett Gammer, Austin Becker and Rylan Nivon registered their first goal of the season.

Goaltender Adam Dmyterko stopped 34 of 35 shots on the night.

Kyle Bosch opened the scoring for the Klippers on the power play 15:06 into the first period. That would be the lone goal the team would score.

Klippers’ goalie Zach Johnson was pulled after allowing five goals on 26 shots. Eighteen-year-old Hudson Killam, who replaced Johnson midway through the third, stopped eight of 10 shots.

Fletcher scored his first as Stars’ captain to tie the game just under three minutes after the Klippers’ broke the ice.

Coming on a delayed penalty, Fletcher capitalized by tapping a loose puck home in front, as the chance developed from an initial shot taken by Gammer that was stopped. Esau picked up a helper on the play as well, for his first point of the evening.

Tied 1-1 after the first period, the shots were also deadlocked at 11 apiece through 20 minutes.

Halfway through the second, Esau notched his first as well, rifling a puck home from the slot of a pass from Gammer down low, to give the visitors their first lead of the night at 2-1 North Stars.

With less than four minutes to go in the middle frame, Quintin Loon-Stewardson scored to give the team an insurance marker.

Loon-Stewardson’s goal came as the result of a Dylan McCabe shot from the point, that deflected clean off Boser’s skate in front and onto the stick of the awaiting goal scorer in front. Just like that it was 3-1.

Despite the deficit, Kindersley remained in the hockey game heading into the third period, trailing the Stars by just a single shot 21-20 through forty minutes of play. The Klippers, however, where unable to solve Dmyterko a second time.

Instead, the ice continued to tilt the way of the Stars. Boser’s tally made it 4-1 just 1:10 into the third. The goal gave the forward his second point of the night, serving as a great way to celebrate his 19th birthday.

Gammer’s goal just over a minute later sealed the night for the Kippers’ Johnson. The goal also served as Gammer’s third point on the night; 5-1 Stars.

Still not done there, Becker cashed in on a nice passing play from his linemates to slam home the 6-1 marker.

Twenty-year-old Rylan Nivon, who picked up the primary on Becker’s goal scored one of his own to finish cap off the night at 7-1.

A gorgeous individual effort shorthanded, Nivon picked-the-pocket of the Klippers’ defenceman in front of the goal, before then deking the goaltender to provide the exclamation park on the night, putting his team up by a touchdown.

The North Stars and Klippers will return to action tomorrow night for round two of their home-and-home set this weekend at the Civic Centre.

The Ultra-Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on 1050 CJNB.
