Fred Light Museum to honour veterans with special banner unveiling

Sep 12, 2019 | 5:00 PM

The Fred Light Museum in Battleford is hosting a special banner unveiling Nov. 1, to honour veterans of the community and area who served for their country in the world wars.

There will be 25 banners hung from lampposts on 22nd Street in Battleford. Each banner is double-sided as a total of 50 veterans will be honoured.

People of the community were invited to sponsor a relative or loved one to be featured on a banner at the event.

Manager at the Fred Light, Bernadette Leslie, said the community’s response to the event in its first year has been a welcome sight. She noted the submission process of those applying to have their loved one represented went by without a hitch, with all 50 available spots filled quickly.

The banners will be displayed for three weeks a year, over the next five years.

They will be hung two weeks before Remembrance Day during the final week of October, and then remain on display for one more additional week following Remembrance Day.

The unveiling ceremony Nov. 1 will run from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Battleford Legion Hall, with coffee and snacks available. Everyone who sponsored a relative will be named off and people can walk down the street and see their relative honoured in the program.

The banners are 30×62 inches and will feature the veteran’s name, picture and the name of their sponsor.

Leslie said she believes the event is important because it serves as a reminder of the sacrifices those who fought for the country’s freedom made.

“I think it is not taught enough in schools to learn about what our relatives sacrificed in the First and Second World Wars,” she said. “This is one way of honouring the veterans and saying thank you for what you sacrificed.”
