Battleford volunteer group planning street party

Those who enjoy a summer evening outdoors, eating, taking in some entertainment, shopping and meeting people will have something to look forward when Battleford has its very own street party in July.

Gail Sack, of the Battleford Community Spirit Group, made the proposal at town council’s meeting Monday.

The former Battleford mayor said the Battleford Community Spirit Group members recently had the idea for the evening party to bring the community together and infuse local pride among residents.

“We needed to revitalize the spirit within our town,” she said. “We have a lot of new residents here in the town, and what better way for them to know what our community is all about.”

The volunteer group didn’t request any funding from the town, only permission to hold the event and to waive any related municipal fees or permits.

“We are confident we will have a huge turnout to help us achieve success,” Sack said.

She also encouraged any people who want to volunteer to help with the project to simply show up and offer their assistance.

The event will take place Thursday, July 18 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on 22nd Street. It will include a variety of festivities, such as a farmer’s market, vendors tables, a sidewalk sale, food trucks, entertainment and children’s activities.

The town will close off the 100 block of 22nd Street at First and Second Avenues from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. to accommodate the event and allow time for preparation and clean-up work after.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the town will work out more of the details during the planning phase for the event.

“It’s exciting. Any time members of the community bring forth ideas and concepts like this to make our community better, and give our residents and our citizens something to do is tremendous,” he said following the meeting. “It is a sense of pride to have people in our community who are willing to take on projects like this.”
