N.B. non-profits asking for winter coat donations for Share The Warmth campaign

Nov 14, 2018 | 1:00 PM

Two local non-profits are once again putting the call out for winter coat donations for children and adults in need.

The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre is partnering with the Battlefords Boys and Girls Club on the project, with support from SaskEnergy through the Share The Warmth program.

People are asked to donate new or clean gently-used outdoor winter clothing, including coats, outerwear accessories, snowpants and boots.

Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre Executive Director Erin Katerynych said it’s important for everyone in the Battlefords to have suitable clothing to withstand the harsh winter season.

“Here in Saskatchewan, it can get very, very cold outside. Some people can’t afford proper winter clothing. We want to make sure they have access to it,” she said. “I hope to make sure we have enough outdoor winter clothing for everybody who needs it.”

Katerynych said a number of coats have already been handed out for children and adults.

People wishing to contribute can drop off their donations at both organizations’ locations in North Battleford.

Coats for Kids day

The Coats for Kids clinic will take place Sat., Nov. 24 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at The Battlefords District Food and Resource Centre this year, so families in need can pick up a warm coat and other outdoor wear items.

“We’re hoping to collect many children’s outdoor winter clothing items and accessories by that date so we can help a lot of people,” Katerynych said. Parents will be able to bring their children to the clinic and get the proper winter clothing for them. Adult sizes will also be available.

Winter clothing collected will also be available at the centre during regular food bank hours – Mondays to Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Last year, through the local Coats for Kids day event alone, a total of 319 winter jackets and ski pants, as well as hundreds of toques, mittens and scarves were given to individuals in need throughout the Battlefords area.

Battlefords Boys and Girls Club executive director Nicole Combres said she and Katerynych are “incredibly grateful to the community” for their donations and contributions.

“There is a grave need in our community for winter gear,” Combres added. “This helps us meet those needs.”
