BATC calls for solutions after closure of Sakewew High School
Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs (BATC) is calling for collaborative solutions following the closure of North Battleford’s Sakewew High School.
In a press release, BATC acknowledged the recent closure of the local Indigenous high school and the significant impact this decision has on students, families, and First Nations communities.
“Education for First Nations peoples has always been more than access – it is about identity, language, relationships, and the continuation of who we are as Nations. Sakewew High School represents a space where students could learn as First Nations people, with their identity embraced and uplifted as an essential part of their learning,” BATC said in the release.
The tribal council said they recognize that the provincial systems struggles to meet the needs of all First Nations students and that this reflects ongoing gaps where it was not originally designed with Indigenous learners at the center.
